A week in the life of a work experience student

The Rosehill team often welcomes work experience students who are keen to find out more about the theatre. Read about Hannah's recent time with us!

My name is Hannah and I am currently a Year 10 student at St Benedict's School, Whitehaven. I have just completed a week of work experience at Rosehill, which I have thoroughly enjoyed.

When I had to pick at the start of the school year where I wanted to spend a week work experience, I decided on the Rosehill as I am interested in design and theatre, especially the behind-the-scenes work. I picked Rosehill specifically as I had already been there multiple times to watch different productions which I had loved plus I had also taken an interest in the theatre itself.

From this experience I had hoped to gain an insight into what goes on behind the scenes of theatre and to find inspiration for what I might want to do in the future.

From the start of the week the Rosehill team were very welcoming and I immediately started learning about what happens behind the scenes of theatre and what has to happen to plan events, organise screenings and get productions on stage.

In addition to this, I was learning more about things I was already interested in, such as history of design within the theatre, as well as different areas I gained a new interest in, such as how to get different productions on the stage.

I learned about how the theatre become accustomed with the public by asking about their specific interests, letting them know when an event they might like is on, and how they do this while keeping their information private.

Furthermore, I learned how to prepare for films, including constructing picture and sound tests to make sure everything runs smoothly.

I also found out about the different roles within the theatre which was very helpful.

I felt the week provided me with an insight into theatre and good experience and new knowledge to take away with me for the future, as well as furthering my interest in the theatre.

It was an insightful and enjoyable week and I hope to be back soon for new events!
