My Fair Lady is a classic musical film directed by George Cukor, adapted from the stage musical by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, itself based on George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion. The story revolves around Professor Henry Higgins (played by Rex Harrison), a phonetics expert who makes a bet with his friend Colonel Pickering (Wilfrid Hyde-White) that he can transform Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn), a poor Cockney flower girl, into a refined lady capable of speaking with an upper-class accent.
The exquisite costumes for My Fair Lady were designed by Cecil Beaton, an esteemed British fashion and stage designer. Beaton, who also worked as a photographer and diarist, was known for his impeccable sense of style and attention to detail. He used Sekers fabric, a luxury textile produced by Sekers Silk Mills in Whitehaven to craft many of the film's sumptuous gowns, including the iconic black-and-white Ascot dress worn by Audrey Hepburn.
The use of Sekers fabric underscored the movie's opulent aesthetic, helping it win the Academy Award for Best Costume Design.
